This course offers an introduction to neoclassical macroeconomics in a closed economy. The course is intended for master’s students who wish to develop a solid background in this area. This course is mandatory for Economics MsC students at CATÓLICA-LISBON.

 

Business Ethics and Social Responsibility

Why does Ethics matter in business?

What are the ethical responsibilities associated with being a manager, an accountant or a financial trader?

What are the main communalities and differences of recent corporate scandals and how is it possible to adopt individual and organizational strategies to prevent new ones?

This course will assist students to answer such questions through the discussion of case studies concerning ethical issues and dilemmas faced by managers, financial professionals and entrepreneurs in different cultural, industrial and organizational contexts.

Consumer Behavior

This course aims to outline the importance of understanding consumers’ behavior in order to develop appropriate marketing strategies. Specific information about how consumers choose, buy, and dispose the products or services, help organizations to properly define its core market and to identify threats and opportunities for their products and brands. It is therefore of major importance to adequately analyze potential consumers, identifying its needs and wishes in order to properly offer customized solutions and be able to successfully innovate.

Critical Thinking in Management

This course intends to open a provocative debate about critical thinking in management. Instead of discussing traditional cases in traditional (almost standardized) ways, Critical Thinking in Management will propose provocative discussions about problems that will concern your professional (and personal) life in the next decades.

Digital Marketing

The internet, social media and technology have transformed marketing. Customers have gained power, have wider choices and are more informed than ever. On the other hand, the technological platforms have boomed and continue to grow. Due to these changes it has become mandatory for companies to adapt and become adopters of tools that consumers have already integrated in their daily lives.  This course helps navigate new ways that companies can communicate, gain awareness and engage consumers. At the same, digital media can lead to new opportunities, changes in business models and market competiitiveness. These issues will be addressed throughout the course.

Economics of Education

Economics is a powerful framework for thinking about education policy. Economics focuses us on the incentives created by a policy, allowing us to predict its intended and unintended consequences. This course investigates current economic issues related to education combining economic theory and empirical literature.

Financial Decision Making in a Business Context

Corporate finance is the study of the financing decisions made by firms. No matter what your role in a corporation, an understanding for the key financial decisions made by the firm is vital. In this course we will focus on two broad financial decisions: - The capital structure decision: What is the optimal mix of securities issued by firms to finance their activities? - The payout decision: How much cash should the firm distribute to its equity holders and how? These encompass a large component of the activity of financial managers.

International Business Challenges

International Business Challenges addresses the important issues that international managers face when operating at a global scale. This course explains why managing a multinational corporation (MNC) is so different from managing a company at a domestic scale. In particular, the course covers the specific challenges facing international, multinational, and global corporations in their managerial decisions, both strategic and operational. Areas of management such as human resources, marketing, finance and accounting, capital markets, and business policy are covered with the international operations in mind. Also, understanding today’s global environment and the challenges facing companies originating from small economies like Portugal are important themes in this course.

Innovation Management

The aim of this course is to provide a series of conceptual tools for profiting from innovation. The course should be of particular interest for future managers, entrepreneurs, or consultants, who must understand the role of innovation in affecting competitive advantage. We will use a combination of lectures and case studies to explore and apply theoretical frameworks in a practical, business policy context.

Industrial Organization

This course aims at providing students with basic knowledge of the main issues in the theory of industrial organization, and to acquaint them with the most widespread models used in this field. The lectures will try to combine analytical rigor with intuitions and also with the discussion of some examples from real world situations.

International Industry Analysis

The International Industry Analysis course aims to develop the strategic, operational and technological competencies of the students, by analyzing specific industries at a global level. The analytical framework covers international demand analysis, international supply analysis, industry structure and international strategic analysis. In addition, research sources and methodologies are discussed.

Financial Modeling

Pre-requisites: Financial Decision Making in a Business Context or Advanced Corporate Finance 

To became a more effective business and financial manager there are certain spreadsheet modeling skills, automation and programming knowledge that must be mastered. This course will focus on advanced spreadsheet features and modeling with Excel, programming and automation of Excel using VBA. In that sense, several applications will be done using interest-rate models and balance-sheet analysis. The course will use a "learn by doing" modular approach with real life business examples.

Luxury & Design-Based Strategies

Pre-requisites: Strategic Management (if not waived) 

The course is a dive into the luxury and design-based industries, with a focus on strategy, innovation and marketing. It is structured as to provide students with the distinctive principles for effective management of luxury and design-based businesses, brands, products and services. The course explores how, luxury and design-based firms and industries have been successful, and what other businesses could learn from them. The course offers a broad overview of the luxury concepts and trains students on how to use those concepts to work in Strategy, Consulting, Innovation or Marketing, in the luxury or design-based industries, or in any other sector where those strategies may be relevant.

Management Information Systems

This course highly contributes to an understanding about information systems and technology (IS/IT) and IS management in organizations. MIS broaches the mainstream Information Systems that managers can deploy in the Information Era. The course presents this subject with an organizational end strategic flavour avoiding pure technological discussions. Information Systems are considered always just a management tool to create value in the context of business models. This course prepares future managers to deal, without prejudice, with IS/IT strategic decisions and IT specialists. IS management is also covered in this course so that future managers can deal with the most correct IS governance mechanisms necessary to deploy strategic projects maintaining IS quality exploitation levels within acceptable patterns.

The main objective of this course is to help students understand several core topics relating to organizational dynamics such as organizational structure, culture, learning, communication, and change. Through cases, class activities, lectures, and assignments, the course will engage students to reflect and apply organizational behavior concepts, theories, and practices to a variety of real-life organizational settings. By the end of this course, students should be able to develop solutions to a range of organizational issues and recommend strategies to improve organizational effectiveness.

Microeconometrics

The goal of this course is to provide students with a thorough understanding of a variety of econometric models that economists use for empirical microeconomic research. Special emphasis will be given to the application of these models to economic data in recent empirical research, in order to illustrate how they can be employed to answer empirical questions in different fields, labor or health economics or finance research questions.

Performance Evaluation

The purpose of this course is to provide some general framework from information economics topics (namely agency theory) to day-to-day problems in corporate governance. Accounting performance measures are viewed here as a way to deliver another monitoring mechanism to the shareholders, and therefore mitigate the agency problems, where the shareholders act as principals and management acts as agent.

Retailing

This course presents the main concepts linked to the theory and practice of retailing. It is designed to prepare students for careers on both sides of the retail field: merchandise buying and store management. It is also useful to those who will be involved as product sales representatives or other distribution positions. Master Goal Seek, Solver, Tables, Scenarios and Pivot Tables

Create Models that are easy to navigate and use them to assist your decision making process

Matlab

ECTS: 1

Pre-requisites: N/A

The course provides an introduction to programming in MATLAB. In addition to language fundamentals, it covers more advanced topics such as optimisation and simulations. Applications in economics and finance are also discussed.

Technical modules have a PASS / FAIL assessment, except Advanced VBA that has a quantitative grade.

All courses are lectured in English.
