The objective of the course is to introduce students to financial accounting. It is primarily intended for students with no previous exposure to accounting at all. The course adopts the decision-maker perspective of accounting, emphasizing the relation between accounting data and the underlying economic events that generated them.

The role of financial accounting is to communicate the business reality to the various stakeholders through financial reports. Managers and other interested groups need to analyse this information to understand the reality lying behind the numbers.
