Message from our Dean #13

Monday, July 6, 2020 - 14:56

Dear members of the CATÓLICA-LISBON community,

First, I would like to share some good news from CATÓLICA-LISBON. A team of marketing Master students won 3rd place in the world in the L’Oréal BRANDSTORM competition to promote a more sustainable, plastic-less future. After their selection as the team to represent Portugal among all Business Schools, Francesca Di Majo, Jonas Strunk and José Saraiva were in the podium of the Global Finals at the end of June, and also won the People’s Choice Award. Congratulations to the team and a special thank you to Prof. Kyryl Lakyshyk who mentored them and other CATÓLICA-LISBON teams in this global competition.

Also at the end of June, our Center for Responsible Business organized the Online Water Summit. This was a very engaging and profound event, bringing together key stakeholders of water in Portugal and the World to address critical issues of water scarcity and improvement of water usage. Please read this summary of the conclusions and next steps from the Summit. This Summit was an initial CATÓLICA-LISBON’s contribution to a stronger movement for Water preservation in Portugal, a movement in which Corporations are a key part of the solution.

Last week we organized two outstanding Knowledge@CATOLICA-LISBON conferences. In the first, Professor Jorge Buescu analysed the latest numbers from the pandemic and our Professor Miguel Gouveia provided us new insights about the impact of the COVID-19 crisis in the health of the Portuguese, measured as a “loss of quality adjusted life years”. I recommend that you watch the video of the conference to gain new insights on the pandemic. In the second conference, Professor João Matos gave us a very insightful and practical seminar on how to approach and manage a difficult negotiation to achieve the best possible outcome. More than 1000 people registered for this conference. Please see the video here to learn about new frameworks to negotiate and excel in tough situations.

Our next digital conference will be Tuesday, July 14, at 17h with Professor Rita Coelho de Vale sharing a new study of consumption patterns of the Portuguese in post-confinement period.

We have much to share at CATÓLICA-LISBON and #WeStandUNITED. United as a community and united in support of a healthy economy capable of fulfilling the needs and aspirations of all citizens.

Filipe Santos, Dean of CATÓLICA-LISBON
