Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation

One of the most dynamic and productive research groups at Católica-Lisbon, the Strategy, Entrepreneurship and Innovation focuses on topics like the relationship between strategy and value creation, the impact of entrepreneurship, both in firms and in the social environment, or the relationships that are built between institutions, strategy and entrepreneurship.

Since 2013, researchers in this group have authored close to 50 scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals, including articles in top journals like the Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science or Management Science. Their high-quality research has received prestigious awards and recognition from organizations like the Academy of Management.

CATÓLICA-LISBON researchers in this field also participate in the academic community by holding editorial positions in journals such as the Journal of Management Studies, the Journal of Business Venturing and the Strategic Management Journal. Ilídio Barreto is a member of the Editorial Review Board of the Academy of Management Journal.

Members of this group are also associated with several of CATÓLICA-LISBON’s Knowledge Centers: the Smart City Innovation Lab, or SCIL, where a research team investigates how technology and digital transformation can contribute to wellbeing in urban areas, or the Center for Technological Innovation & Entrepreneurship, which funds research and is also an active piece of the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Patient Innovation is another example of a significant platform which has received international accolades which was started by a researcher associated with this area.

Main research topics

One important line of research within this group deals with the relationship between strategy and value creation in environments that are becoming more prevalent in current economies. They address questions such as how and why some firms are able to adapt to changing environments while others fail. Some of the team’s researchers focus on how institutions, strategy and entrepreneurship connect to one-another. For example, how do laws and regulations accept the behavior and results of firms?

This group also works on the topic of how entrepreneurship and innovation affect and influence value creation in the private sector. How do firms cope with dynamic environments through innovation? How are new business opportunities discovered in these changing backdrops?

Another fundamental question these researchers try to answer is how entrepreneurship and innovation can be sources of social value. How is it that organizations and individuals can drive positive social change through innovative ideas? How can firms realize social goals without risking financial sustainability?
