CUBE History and Mission

Established in 1997, CUBE is the Business and Economics Research Unit of CATÓLICA-LISBON, a top 30 European Business School according to Financial Times ranking, and among 1% of business schools worldwide to hold the coveted "Triple Crown" of AACSB, EQUIS, and AMBA accreditations.

The mission of CUBE is to be among the top research groups in Business and Economics in Europe, recognized internationally for its research excellence, publications in top journals, and impact on society. In periodic assessments by the Portuguese Science and Technology Foundation (FCT) panels of international experts, CUBE has always received the highest grade (EXCELLENT). In the 2014 evaluation, CUBE received - 24,5 out of 25 - the highest score of any Social Sciences research unit in Portugal.


CUBE research has had a significant impact on the scientific community, organizations, and society through the dissemination of research in articles and conferences, through education, via spin-offs from CUBE research. CUBE researchers publish in and serve on editorial boards of the top academic journals in their fields, take leadership roles in scholarly communities, and engage in applied research projects. CUBE provides conditions for researchers to pursue cutting-edge research that impacts society and is published in top journals.

CUBE has 53 PhD members, of 10 nationalities and with PhDs from the best business schools worldwide. Most are research faculty at CATÓLICA-LISBON. CUBE research covers the major areas of Management and Economics. Since 2004, the unit has been actively hiring newly-minted PhDs from top research universities in Europe and North America for tenure-track positions. The school interviews candidates each year at top international conferences (e.g. Academy of Management, American Marketing Association, American Economic Association).

In competition with the best international business schools, high potential researchers have been hired from MIT (Macroeconomics), Washington University, St. Louis (Marketing, Macroeconomics), Bocconi University (Strategy), Tilburg University (Finance, Marketing), London School of Economics (Finance), and University of Arizona (Marketing). The unit now includes researchers of 12 nationalities coming from countries as diverse as Italy, France, Brazil, Canada, Iran, Germany, Turkey, Finland and USA. High standards for promotion and tenure are maintained using a points-system for journal publications that sets minimum requirements.

A vibrant seminar series, funding for data collection and industry databases, and access to RA’s and postdocs are provided, along with opportunities for 2-6 month research visits to MIT or CMU, in the context of international partnership with both institutions.

In 2013-2017 CUBE members published 139 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, including 46 in the FT 50 list of journals and 28 in 4* journals on the ABS list, and presented over 370 papers at major international conferences.
