1st Symposium on the Effects of Sustainability and Socially Responsible Practices on Society

1st Symposium on the Effects of Sustainability and Socially Responsible Practices on Society

CATÓLICA-LISBON - 28 November 2019

Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics

The increasing consciousness amongst public and private organizations towards a better and more sustainable future that are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is leading a change for good. Along with a need for differentiation, market players are increasingly allocating part of their budget to the development of socially responsible and sustainable practices.

Despite the increasing commitment of organizations from the private and public sector in the development of socially responsible practices, little is known to what extent the adoption of these practices have a social and environmental impact on society. Understanding the impact of socially responsible strategies undertaken by companies and organizations on consumers’ and other market players' adoption of similar sustainable and socially responsible behaviors is thus of extreme relevance.

In this symposium we bring together worldwide institutions, companies, and academics with the purpose of better understanding what is done in terms of corporate social responsibility practices and its implications for society.

Full Symposium Presentation

The increasing consciousness amongst public and private organizations towards a better and more sustainable future that are in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is leading a change for good. Along with a need for differentiation, market players are increasingly allocating part of their budget to the development of socially responsible and sustainable practices. For instance, in the retail and service industry, Unilever embraced publicly a strong commitment to the pursuit of sustainable practices with the purpose of improving health and well-being, reducing environmental impact, and enhancing livelihoods (“Unilever Sustainable Living Plan”). In a similar vein, UK’s retailer Tesco also has been showing its strong commitment to the United Nations initiative that encourages businesses worldwide to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies- “Recommitting to the UN Global Compact”.

Despite the increasing commitment of organizations from the private and public sector in the development of socially responsible practices, little is known to what extent the adoption of these practices have a social and environmental impact on society. For instance, what is the impact on society when a retailer develops a campaign to stimulate in-store recycling behaviors? Or what is the societal impact of sustained efforts and actions from organizations such as the UN aiming to improve societal access to clean drinking water? This is an issue of major relevance since it is critical that consumers and society in general start embracing more sustainable behaviors in order to protect the world for future generations and improve current generations well-being.
